Are you looking to make a difference in the lives of 150 homeless men and women this winter? If so, then we have a great opportunity for you! On November 15th, Allegheny County’s Winter Emergency Shelters will open its doors for men and women. These shelters house about 150 men and women each night until March 15th. Because of the quality of our service we have joined the Northside Homeless Alliance in serving meals to the shelter guests this winter. We are looking for volunteers to assist in serving the meals each night from 6:30PM - 8:00PM. Below you will see more details and have the ability to sign up.

The Need:

Because we are trying to change the culture of how food is served at this shelter, we are looking for volunteers who not only pass out food, but who serve food directly to people, clean up, and provide a warm and hospitable atmosphere. You don’t need to be experienced in food service. You just need to be flexible, able to move quickly on your feet, and have a very friendly and personable attitude.

Each night of the week, the meal for 100 people will be brought to the shelter. Your job as a volunteer will be to serve the food. You will report to the Food Service Manager, Barb Webb, who will help explain and show you what you will be doing. She will be delegating the assignments for the night and will provide you with all of the supplies you need (gloves, hairnets, aprons, etc).

Once you complete the form with your desired service days, Barb will reach out to you to confirm your date and explain final logistics.

Shelter Details:

The Winter Shelter is located at the Smithfield United Church of Christ at 620 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222. On street parking is free after 6pm, but can be difficult to find sometimes. Make sure to leave yourself enough time to find parking and still get to the shelter no later than 6:30PM. Please make sure to also check the Pittsburgh Penguins schedule, because a home game can make traffic tricky to find.

Requirements:

As a volunteer, you will have to sign a volunteer waiver from Operation Safety Net. You will be given this form upon your arrival on your first night serving.

All volunteers must be at least 14 years of age. Volunteers 14-17 must be accompanied by a legal parent or guardian.

As a volunteer, you must be willing to show respect and care to those coming to eat, regardless of their background and/or lifestyle. If you struggle being around people who are different from you, this service opportunity might be challenging for you.

You must arrive at the shelter no later than 6:30PM and stay until at least 8:00PM to help with clean up. The actual shelter opens at 7:00PM and dinner is served until 8:00PM

Thank you for your interest in serving during the 2018/2019 Winter Shelter season! Because of the overwhelming response, we are no longer taking additional volunteers to serve. If you would like to find out other ways to serve, please contact us at volunteer@livingministry.org
